Green toads and fish

In one of my books (I would quote it but I can't seem to find it) it says that green toads (before the proposed split so s.l.) are usually intolerant of fish in their breeding ponds but that some populations are tolerant (I presume due to higher levels of toxins).

Does anyone know more about this - perhaps have a reference?

My own local population surprises me in this regard. They breed in a shallow area of flooded land between two larger lakes. With almost no cover to hide in they seem to do just fine alongside not only ninespine sticklebacks but also large numbers of huge meter long eels.
