So this repeated behaviour after flash exposure can indicate a vision loss.

Why do you think so?

It's the logic that induces one to think so.
If they use the tongue to clean their eyes, it's logical to think that they clean their eyes when or especially when they have somehow an impaired vision (from dirt or something like this).
If their clean their eyes more often after being flashed, one can correctly suppose they have somehow impaired vision after being flashed.
Having said this, I think and I hope that a permanent vision impairment would be rather improbable... a flash is not a laser light... :cry:

I don't think, that they get a permanent problem with their eyes. It is a big argument in owl photography two but in fact there is no permanent damage by flashing them one or two times. Yes for sure owl eyes are a little bit different, but I can say it for my geckos (Nephrurus milii). Flashlight used more than oncd and they still see their prey very good. But still maybe we should think more about how much we can do/don't with the animals we photograph.
