saving from extinction

Has it ever happened that in order to protect a species from extinction it was introduced beyond its native range?

Maybe. The closer thing that I know is the extinction of the lions in Morocco -"Atlas lions"-, that survive in European zoos ("beyond his range"), or Atheris matildae that just discovered were kept in captivity to the pet trade to avoid poachers in the wild and the extintion of its populations. But releasing a species beyond its range could change the ecosystem in the new place so I´m not sure it´s recomendable (to save a species, maybe extint others?)
