New reptile species in the Island of Madeira

Postby miguel santos » Mon Mar 31, 2014 7:59 am

I don't know if it is widely known but on the 23th of September 2013, there was a publication in Portugal about the discovery in the town of Funchal ( Madeira ) of Ramphotyphlops braminus. This species was detected in a area smaller than 2km2 but widspread within it. This species was already detected in the Canaries.
I must say that I never heard before about this species and went searching for information, it is quite a special animal I found out.
Does any of you ever saw such an animal ?

That snake is very interesting, it has a residual hindlimb and pelvic girdle.
Moreover, it's parthenogenetic.

Hence its success as alien "invader"...
