Some species from Chad, but which...

Postby GertJan Verspui » Thu Jun 10, 2010 4:22 pm

In the winter months of 2008-2009 I was in Chad for a while, there were almost no chances of doing some herping, but I did find some animals.
I do not know the names for these species, so if anybody knows I will be very pleased.

Chamaeleon = Chamaeleo africanus
agama = Agama agama male (if they havnt split it meanwhile) :oops:
very small gecko = Tropiocolotes sp. (nostril between supralabials)
gecko, bigger one = no idea
skink = the same
snake(s) = Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia
blue tailed skink = Mabuya quinquetaeniata, if not split during last decade(s) :oops:
monitor = Varanus exanthematicus
Tortoise = Geochelone sulcata

[EDIT:] Mabuya quinquetaeniata is now Trachylepis quinquetaeniata!

GertJan,

the lizard is a Lacertidae for sure! But we are not sure on the Genus or species now! Diagnosis by Werner Mayer: Lacertidus diffusus ssp. chadicus

The skink with the yellow stripe is an adult male of Trachylepis quinquetaeniata. It was original described as Mabuia quinquetaeniata scharica, Sternfeld, 1917 on its dark (black) throat. Terra typica somewhere along the Shari river between NW of Central African Republic and SE of Chad. Now synomized with Trachylepis quinquetaeniata.

And at least: Geochelone sulcata is now Centrochelys sulcata. Geochelone are now only the two Asian tortoises G. platynota and G. elegans.
