Some herping on a family holiday in NW France

Postby Etienne Littlefair » Tue Aug 28, 2012 11:13 pm

Hi all,

I am new to this forum and in fact any field herping websites so hopefully this post will work ok and you will enjoy my photos.

Unfortunately due to it being a family holiday I did not have the chance to search for amphibians particularly - hopefully next time. I did see one Epidalea calamita but no photograph.

It seems like the pictures have not uploaded in quite the order I intended (my error no doubt) but the 6 'middle pictures' were all taken at the same site, on that day I saw 3 adult V. berus, 1 very large Natrix natrix which unfortunately I missed, and 2 others, both around 65cm. I also saw 9 Lacerta bilineata, of which only 2 were female, 3 Anguis fragilis and finally 2 Coronella austriaca.

Not bad for a family holdiay!

First herp of the trip, Vipera berus, seen in the UK in between home and the ferry terminal in Portsmouth!

On the final day I thought I would take a walk to a site next to the town I was staying in that I had located on google earth, despite very hot weather I managed to find 2 more Vipera berus and also a freshly shed Vipera berus skin.

Anguis fragilis - male.

On the walk back to the car I checked out the site where I had seen the first 2 berus, and low and behold a third had joined them!

Coronella austriaca - a first for me! And one of 2 observed on the day!!!

Vipera berus - Gravid female on the right and underneath (I think).

Zootoca vivipara - female. Same site as the previous berus.

The next reptile was also a Vipera berus, this time a female around 40cm. I came accross her unexpectedly at a bird reserve in Brittany.

Welcome here, Etienne!
Nice shots.
I love the pic with the 3 berus at one spot (at this time of the year)!

Putting the pics in right order - as you would like to show:
Place the cursor at the line, where the picture should be and click "place inline" at the choosen picture.
Thats all.
