Season 2014 in North-East France

Postby Guillaume Gomard » Tue Mar 11, 2014 9:42 pm

Hello fellow herpers,

I open a new topic here to report the observations I will do in North-east France during this new season. The situation is completely different than 2013 because the temperatures are already quite high (around 20°C reached last week-end), and also because the vegetation is already covering most of my spots. I think it will be quite challenging this year to photograph asp vipers matings, and more generally snakes in situ. I start this topic with some muddy Podarcis and L.bilineata enjoying the beautiful weather of last Sunday, and the single V.aspis I could find so far. I guess that the other ones will follow during this week.

Second pic would be a really suitable one for a Euro herp quiz (no? masseteric scale, even?).

Update from last week-end: Almost all the critters were out during this sunny week-end (around 20°C). I was pleased to see that all the vipers apparently had something in their stomach and seemed in good shape. I could not observe any mating activity so far.

During 2 days I think I observed dozen of them in the mornings. Unfortunately I never saw one of them in an asp's month...
