The vipers are great, but yes!!

+1 :)

I still haven't been to the local adder site but I found this guy a few nights ago while having a cigarette in the small park next to my home (hence the phone photo). The photo is in-situ, he was on his way to the water. I wonder if this was his post-hibernation migration to the pond or if he was already in the pond and got out to feed. His crest and tail fin look developed so I assume he's been in the water already.

Unfortunately, the weather has gone bad again since then and I haven't seen any neither on land nor in the water.

Season finally under way here in Denmark as well now.

Saw my first - incidental - herp of the year Monday evening as I went for a walk after dropping off my daughter at ballet practice, a common toad crossing the path en route to the pond.

Last night I went on the first dedicated herping trip, just a short stop at two small ponds for our earliest anuran breeder, the agile frog. I had heard reports of choruses the previous night but it was late before I got out and temeperatures had dropped, a thin crust of ice forming on the surface.

Predictably, activity was low with no calling males. Nonetheless I found 15 frogs, including one amplexed couple, 8 smooth newts, and 2 great crested newts.

Elsewhere in Denmark, reports of the first common frogs, viviparous lizard and grass snake have ticked in. The latter is quite surprising, given that I haven't heard of adders yet. These should show up any day now, though...

As I had to drive to France this week-end, I took the occasion to herp during the few sunny hours and could observe around 10 asp vipers (males), either isolated or in group (max. group made of 3 individuals). Few portraits below:

My herping appetite should next lead me to my favorite adder sites :)

Last friday I seted off to take my chances. I hope in adders, but only found two brave viviparous lizards and some agile frog males in puddles. Anyway I´m happy winter is gone here and everything slowly starting...
