Jordan: ID Reptiles

Postby MICHELE STENICO » Wed May 30, 2012 8:14 pm

Hi,
I am new in herpetology so I am sorry for my obvious question and my terrible picture. I have been in Jordan this febbruary and I woul like to identify some species I have observed in Wadi Rum desert and Petra
The First One, i think it a Laudakia stellio brachydactyla
I found the second species in Wadi Rum desert
I found the third species in Petra site: I try to identified it, Mesalina b.brevirostris.

Thank you for your contribution !!!!

Michele

Hi Michele!

The first - I am not sure!
the second is Pristurus rupestris
the third is Laudakia stellia

The first one looks like a Acanthodactylus to me

hi,

the "Mesalina" is an Acanthodactylus for sure.
From distribution A. boskianus is possible. This one would fit also by the larger dorsal scales in the rear of the back, but not good with obscure markings.
Others, occuring there are: A. opheodurus and A. tristrami. Last one would fit best by coloration and markings, but the enlarged dorsal scales are not so distinct in this species.

Yes - that's what I've written first A. boskianus, but then I was not sure and edited the posting.
If it is directly in Petra, I should be A. boskianus, they are quite common there.
For sure not tristrami they look different and occur in the higher steppe habitats some 20 km North of Petra - the habitat does not match for tristrami.

Thank you for yours answers I was so sure it was Mesalina sp....my way for sufficient competence is really long and long.
The Acanthodactylus sp. has been found in Petra Site close to the monastery (Al- Dayr)
