I know there are some dragonfly people on this forum, so I thought you might know more about this.
The last few weeks I observed some nocturnal dragonfly activity around the neighbourhood, mainly Aeshna species. I know almost nothing about these beautiful insects but I was surprised to find they fly at night since I thought they mainly navigate by sight (or do they?). Unfortunately, quite a few of them are becomming easy prey for the local cats.
I found almost nothing on the web, apart from this http://opinicon.wordpress.com/2010/08/14/observations-of-dragonflies-visiting-lights-at-night/ but it concernes some observations in the US and doesn't give a lot of answers.
So, have you seen nocturnal dragonfy activity and does anybody know why they fly at night?
Thanks,
Ilian
