Thailand: Khao Yai National Park

Thailand: Khao Yai National Park

Postby Ruggero M. » Sat Dec 06, 2014 2:54 pm

I was in Thailand on three different occasions, but the most reptiles were seen in the Kao Yai National Park, and, for this reason (and also because during the other travels I had no digital camera or no camera at all!) I will post here some pictures of this place. Even if Khao Yai is a very touristic destination, especially during holidays periods.

Forest is the dominating habitat inside the park, but just outside the park boundaries you can met many fields, meadows, agricultural areas and secondary forest: all these optimal habitats for reptiles and amphibians.

In this hut we found two snakes sheds. One shed came frome a flying snake Chrysopelea (if I remember well).

In this other hut we found instead an actual snake...

Yes, a green small snake... But what kind of snake? A Boiga? A red tailed racer? Or a Trimeresurus?

Boiga cyanea

In the same hut many butterflies and... Boiga food!

Boiga food (I'm not able to be more accurate in the determination)

Boiga cyanea was a rather common species, and we met babies and adult snakes as well

korros.jpg

Ptyas korros is a very particular type of snake: common, fast, diurnal, well appreciated as food by the locals, and... with the capacity to lose the tip of its tail if grabbed by the tail by a predator. As I could test myself when I tried to catch a big specimen while it was crossing a road: I grabbed it by its tail, as we herpers normally do, and I found myself in a few seconds only with a korros tail in my hand!

In this case we arrived few minutes later...

Is this a Ptyas korros too?

Yes, Ptyas mucosus is another common finding around this area

And a wonderful baby found by my friends directly in our guest house!

Babies korros are also beautiful and different from the adults, but I've no pictures of them

A warning signal or an invitation...?

Clearly an invitation...

Unfortunately I was not with my friends during that encounter, and the only cobra I could watch was this, which wasn't crossing any road neither doing anything interesting...

Great post, and nice to see Khao yai again. It´s such a tranquil place full of life :) That yellow A. prasina is a true beauty, new they where around in that color but never seen one myself. Tell me is the crocodile still in the river close to the park restaurant area?

Thanks Kriss.

The crocodiles lived, but I've not seen them: my friends did, and they also observed retic and molurus pythons. But I went only once in Khao Yai, while my friends more times.
