Turkey 2015

Postby Rob Andriessen » Mon May 11, 2015 10:38 pm

I spent last week on a resort near Kusadasi, on the Aegean coast of Turkey. It was a familiy trip and I spent a lot of time eating and sliding down waterslides, but I still managed to find a decent amount of species, as the amount of herps at walking distance from the resort was surprisingly high.

Observations include:

Ablepharus kitaibelii
Anatololacerta anatolica
Blanus strauchi
Eirenis modestus
Eryx jaculus
Hemidactylus turcicus
Lacerta trilineata
Mauremys rivulata
Natrix natrix
Natrix tesselata
Ophisops elegans
Platyceps najadum
Pseudopus apodus
Stellagama stellio
Telescopus fallax
Testudo graeca
Trachylepis aurata
Typhlops vermicularis

Bufo viridis
Lissotriton vulgaris
Pelophylax bedriagae (?)

I'll try to upload some pictures soon.

Hey Rob,

very nice findings! Especially the Eryx & Telescopus!
You mixed up the names of the turtles...

thanks for showing this nice spectrum of herps, one may encounter just by walking from the holiday ressort ;)
btw, it is Mauremys rivulata, not caspica along the turkish mediterranean coast.

Well, that was more than I expected!
I spent a week in the same hell hole for work back in 2003 with not much to show for except Trachylepis, Anatololacerta, Testudo, Bufotes and Mauremys. Where did you find the Anatololacerta? Dilek Peninsula?

Thanks Mario, I changed caspica to rivulata.

I saw definitely more than I expected, I would have settled for 10 species. 8 of the species were new to me, which was also great. It was really great to see my first Telescopus just hanging around in the bushes at night next to the resort and to find my first Eryx, and finding the (relatively large?) Eirenis modestus one hour before departure on the last day was a nice bonus.
Weather conditions were ideal around 10 AM and 6-7 PM, with large numbers of dice and grass snakes, turtles, agamas and glass lizards. There were many different habitats close to the resort, ranging from (salty) marshes, a small stream, a dump site, agricultural fields, rock slopes, a forest and old ruins.

I saw all species really close to the resort, except for Eryx, Blanus and Ablepharus which I saw next to the Ephesus archeological site (10 min drive) and Bufo viridis at the Dilek national park. Unfortunately I don't have photos of Anatololacerta; I'm almost sure I saw them at Dilek national park and I think I also saw them near the resort, but I'm not sure which other wall lizard-like species I could have seen there.
