Costa Rica, summer 2016

Postby Robin Duborget » Mon Sep 19, 2016 9:20 am

Hello,

During this summer we went to Costa Rica with my wife and two friends. A group of four biologist teachers ;)
In three weeks we toured this country :
=> Nicoya peninsula => very touristic place, but with species only here in Costa Rica.
=> Monteverde => Cloud forest, beautiful place but there isn't a lot of amphibians.
=> Area of Volcan Arenal
=> La Selva Biological station => naturalist's paradise : The carribean "pristine" rainforest. The numerous trails, accessible also at night (the national park are closed at night, at the "night tour" are a bit useless), make this reserve the best herping place in Costa Rica with the CRARC.
=> Costa Rican Amphibian research center : the best place in the country for seing amphibians. The owner, Brian Kubicki, is a specialist of this group in Costa Rica. Going with him in his Guayacan reserve is a great experience for those interested in frogs.
=> San Gerardo de Dota => at 2500 m high, there isn't a lot of species but the landscape are very interesting (as the birds).
=> Osa peninsula => wildest place in Costa Rica, with a lush rainforest, very rich in species. It's a bit hard to find good herping places. A shame that we found a very interesting place in Rio Piro during last night in the country.

There is a lot (and a lot) of pictures, so I made two flickr album :
Amphibians => https://flic.kr/s/aHskGYKQWp
"reptiles" => https://flic.kr/s/aHskJ7iphW
I should make a general album, with other animals, landscape, but don't have time to finish it now (https://flic.kr/s/aHskGYJEHv) ...

I didn't saw all the amphibian species I want, but in diversity, when counting birds and insects, it was very awesome.
There is most probably some incorrect identification, so feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Stunning images, you shot that calcarifer pretty darn well! Congrats on the photography :). I am curious for the non-herp animals too.

Very nice observations! Was it raining a lot during your stay? Your non-ID colubrid at the CRARC should be Mastigodryas melanolomus.

Thanks ! A fantastic trip yes, that was our first time in continental neotropic (only been in Carribean islands before), so this diversity is impressive !

My favourite species of the trip !

I will edit the "general" album and putting some birds and mammals. I will make a separate one for insects but that will take a lot of time for identification. To keep you waiting :
