After exactly 2 months of herping inactivity (last reptiles seen were lizards around Madrid during Xmas time), I was very pleased to observe again N.natrix basking at around 12h (T°C around 11°C according to weather forecast). 3 specimens were spotted in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Here we go! 8-)

Here in Bavaria spring finally kicked in as well, and Laura and I headed towards the a beautiful moor close to the Alps. While there were still patches of snow and ice we found the first hardy reptiles (Anguis, Vipera, Zootoca) out basking. For us this was a personal record and we have never found snakes in February in Bavaria before. The Adders were still very dirty from spending several months in hibernation.

Adder number 2, easy to spot as it was almost white!

Again no basking adders on snow, but this lucky find made up for that!

Nice to see those dirty adders from different parts of Germany. From my own observations (4 more N.natrix spotted today) and from what I can read here and there, it seems that this year is indeed quite peculiar because of the quite mild winter.

I would not call this a mild winter:
