Northern Portugal in winter 2018/2019 - tripreport

Postby Bobby Bok » Thu Jan 24, 2019 9:48 pm

Laura and I have been in Northern Portugal for a week after Christmas. Although it was rather cold and dry, we tried to find as many animals as possible. Especially Fire Salamanders were seen in the craziest places, from urban parks to coastal dunes.

Beautiful scenery. If unicorns existed, they would be found in that enchanted forest! Congrats on the photography, I enjoyed all of the Salamandra pictures very much!

Congratulations Bobby! You did really well finding all of those amphibian species. The pictures are great, thanks for sharing.
I have one doubt. You mention Lissotriton boscai ssp. maltzani. I thought this taxa was only present in the Southwestern tip of Portugal (Algarve). Is there any recent literature about it?

I forgot to comment on the possible Triturus hybrid in my previous post... It clearly has intermediate characters. For me it is the gold medal of your trip. I wonder if the contact zone of both taxa has been properly studied... Well done Bobby!

This was lazy copy-pasting a specieslist from a previous trip, is fixed now :D

It actually has! Still very interesting to see this in-situ and for us also one of the highlights of the trip together with the fire salamanders at weird places.
