Syrian expedition report 2010

Postby Nikola Rahmé » Thu Aug 19, 2010 11:22 am

Hi guys, check out my photo report of our Syrian trip which was between 26.05.2010 and 08.06.2010. The highlight of the tour was the finding of Montivipera bormuelleri in the Northwestern mountains. Unfortunately the language is Hungarian but I hope you will enjoy it through my photos!

Great report Nicola :!:
And everybody see, in reality you are a Coleoptera (and other Arthropods) guy ;) ;)
But I love them too. All this spectrum in morphology and colors!
Maybe you will have an idea on this one. Found between Ouarzazate and Amerzgane, Morocco; April 2010

The pictures are great!
I liked to see you only wrote Acanthodactylus (sp.) in the 1st picture ;) , we had the same problem in Morocco this spring. No useable key for the whole genus, except boskianus, which is very easy to identify :D
And the M. bornmuelleri is great, what else I should write as a vipers lover!

Thanks for sharing!!

Dear Mario,
Thanks for your words. The Acanthodactylus was difficult to me and I asked for help Bayram Göcmen, he would know better the fauna of that region than me. He told me for the Acanthodactylus sp. is A. opheodurus, but I haven't found it on the checklist of Syria. For the other one he told A. boskianus, I must believe him :)
For your jewel beetle: it is Julodis aequinoctialis, a nice photo of it! The meloidae is a Berberomeloe majalis, the Tenebrionidae is difficult for me, there are hundreds of similar species, and I am not a specialist for them :)
Regards, Nikola

BTW it's pity what has happened to the EMBL Reptile Database. Before my trip I studied it many times. Hope it will be reborn somewhere/some time.

Nicola, thanks for the beetles determination!

Acanthodactylus boskianus is the only one, you may distinguish very easy.
Only in this species(group) the dorsal scales and their keeling get larger from the front to the back. Easy seen on your photo ;)

Okay, Mario, thank you for the description! I work on a whole checklist of our observed and photographed species, when it will be ended, I'll upload it here!
