Postby Vlad Cioflec » Tue Jun 14, 2011 5:19 am

Hi gang!

First, i must apologize for my recent `radio silence` and congratulate all of you who posted those nice reports latley. I no longer have internet acsess at work, my computer from home broke down, and now i`m not even in Romania; i am writing to you from Modavia. :mrgreen:
But slow internet is better than no internet at all, right?! ;)

As the title says, i came here to add Podarcis tauricus to my year list, and i have done that on my first day out! :D Sorry for the short narative, but the keyboard is not working properly and it`s taking a lot of time to copy-paste letters from other texts...Here are some shots from the steppe:

I fipped lots of AC and saw many toads this way. But sometimes under the cover i found the strangest things... :lol:

And their parent too !

When herping was slow i focused on inverts, and so i photographed this cuties:

We still have a few days of herping ahead of us and if anything new pops up i`ll post it here for sure. Thanks for reading.

Nice finds, Vlad! What's the bird which nest you flipped? Is the fishing rod for fish or lizards? ;)

Thanks for the replies everybody!

The fishing rod is for keeping my father in-law busy while i run around the watering holes in search of herps and birds. :D
And the unusual flip actually invoved both the nest and the mother Northern Wheatear.

Anyway, our daughter turned one today, check out her `present` ;) :

Vlad,

Glad you got your wanted tick :D .. I must being soft in my old age but I really think your daughter should have a car seat, left to rattle around in the boot she might damage the fishing rod :D

Happy first birthday :P wish Id started herping at one..Id have a better list :D

Went for a walk outside the town this morning and saw some neat creatures in spite of the intense heat. Most are inverts :P , but there is a herp in there as well. ;)

Morphologically, their presence has been established for Romania too.
=> http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/b ... 1/art00006

The black one we saw is (or should be) one =>
http://www.hylawerkgroep.be/jeroen/index.php?id=39

Same place, different team =>
http://www.klooiplek.eu/trips/romania/b ... orest.html

Note that molecular data needs to confirm the morphological evidence. At present, the taxonomical status is unclear, so the best decision seems to at least not treat this as a separate species. So, based on available info = Vipera berus nikolskii, perhaps Vipera (berus) nikolskii, but not Vipera nikolskii (in my opinion).
