That's one amazing Coronella!! Since 3 weeks I'm walking in Coronella habitats and I have encountered a subsequent number now, but only the regular grey or brown specimens. I never found one snake as bright as the one you are showing here. But look at this one:

I, too, in south Italy, Apulia, near Monopoli (Ba) I found two Coronelle really red, but unfortunately I did not have the camera

The belly was pretty "normal" I'm afraid, pale off-white with dark markings. Definitely best viewed from above ;)

here are two scans (same specimen) from slides from Weitwörth ( a few km north of town Salzburg), shot on May 2nd, 1992. nearly adult male (approx. 45 - 50 cm)

Some nice looking snakes!

Here's a juvenile that's a lot similar to Mario's individual - red belly and normal dorsal.

that is typical for juveniles!
they lose the red belly if they get adult.

attached the red one ... to bad, looking at the pic this one is not red at all. foto must be bleached out over the years :-D
